CANINE UPPER RESPIRATORY PROTOCOL

Safety first!

By now you have probably heard about the Canine Upper Respiratory outbreak that has been reported in the news.   While we feel confident that our students have been recently seen by a licensed veterinarian and have submitted their signed veterinary permission slips to ensure that all dogs attending are healthy and vaccinated, we wanted to also let you to know the extra steps we will be taking to ensure maximum safety.

The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association released this statement on the situation:

“We suggest caution rather than worry. Periodic outbreaks of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC) can occur in a dog population. At least nine different bacteria and viruses have been linked as causes of CIRDC, which is transmitted by respiratory droplets. Infection with more than one bacterial or viral agent is common. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, nasal and/or eye discharge, and lethargy. If your dog shows these symptoms, please check with your veterinarian.”

You can read the full statement here.

The American Veterinary Medical Association also has this useful information on the disease available here.

In addition to our regular disinfection protocols, we are putting in place a number of precautions to help keep our dogs safe:

  • Hand sanitizer and wipes will be available. Staff will utilize them between interactions with dogs.

  • The classroom has separate entrance and exit areas to minimize dog contact.  Please space yourselves while you wait to enter via the front door and plan to exit via the back door.

  • We have eliminated community water bowls.  Please bring your own unbreakable bowl and water in case your dog needs a drink.

  • Please don't share chewies or toys between dogs.

  • If your dog shows any signs of illness, PLEASE LEAVE THEM HOME and come without them.  Any dog who is coughing or appears ill will be excused and rescheduled for a future class.  If you have any questions about your dog's health, please contact your veterinarian.

PLEASE SOCIAL DISTANCE.

  • DOGS SHOULD REMAIN AT LEAST 6 FEET OR MORE APART AT ALL TIMES.

  • DO NOT CONGREGATE AT ENTRANCES OR EXITS.

  • PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WATER AND UNBREAKABLE WATER DISH.

PLEASE COME WITHOUT YOUR DOG IF YOUR DOG SHOWS ANY SIGNS OF ILLNESS.

  • PLEASE AVOID DOG PARKS OR DAY CARE.

  • IF YOUR DOG HAS BEEN RECENTLY BOARDED OR REGULARLY ATTENDS THE DOG PARK, PLEASE LET US KNOW.   We will postpone your registration.

Our staff will be diligent to disinfect chairs, floors, equipment, etc. between classes.

We will allow for time between classes to make sure everything is disinfected before the next group of students is admitted.

Thanks for your patience and your following the safety protocols to keep our pups safe.
