The new order of books have a section in the back with all the handouts and homework sheets previously in the folder.
The only inserts are the kid rules, make-up info, and flyer about the Behavior 101 lectures. The next round of printing the handouts will be multi-colored, so you can say "the blue page shows the sit, down, and stand" ... "the orange page gives reward suggestions", etc.

CGC congrats on the website
Kathie W will be putting a list together of past CGC grads so we can congratulate our students who achieved this great accomplishment. Instructors, too! A couple of students have already submitted photos of their dogs. See the page here. Send me your photos!

Article:
Noise Phobia and Hearing Acuity in Border Collies (and other purpose-bred dogs)
1. An investigation of noise phobia and other anxiety related behaviors in Border Collies. Noise phobias typically manifest as fear or panic responses to sounds such as thunder, fireworks, or gunshots, and are common in Border Collies. In some cases, noise phobias are severe enough to affect a dog’s working utility or quality of life.
2. An investigation of hearing acuity and response to auditory cues in working Border Collies. Most studies of hearing in dogs merely measure whether the subject can hear or not. We are interested in what and how well they hear, and how they use these auditory cues to make decisions, in working contexts and in “civilian life.”
3. An investigaion of population structure and variation within the Border Collie breed, investigating questions such as whether or not there is a “split” between dogs bred primarily for working, and dogs bred primarily for show.

AWESOME STUDY!

Dogs First Week

Often there are one or two who didn't catch the part of the confirmation that says "people only week one." Do not make them feel bad. Welcome them and their dog and get them settled in with a stuffed Kong to keep them busy. I bring this up again as I had a past student registering a new puppy today who wanted to clarify that his puppy wasn't supposed to come week one - because he "remembered a poor woman being 'ridiculed' for bringing her dog week one" when he attended before and he "wanted to be sure it didn't happen to him." While I realize that no one really 'ridiculed' anyone, if it stood out to this fellow as such, we need to always be mindful of how others perceive what is said. Positive with people and puppies!!

If a dog is shy, I will recommend that the student bring it to week one to get in an extra day to acclimate the dog to the class room before the rest arrive week two.

Kim emailed asking for the links to the shirts - in case anyone else was wondering, here they are! Old styles and a couple of new ones: If I could figure out how to make them transparent, they would look better on the dark shirts - so far I am not that talented.

Positive Trainer Passes
I just heard on a web list that Patty Ruzzo (good friend and training partner to Leslie Nelson) passed away on May 4th. Here is her obituary. She was only 56 - apparently complications from a stroke. Her video "The Power of Positive Training" with Ted Turner & Leslie Nelson is in our RH library.

What an awesome quote in tribute to her memory by Suzanne Clothier:
"In the darkness of your grief, may you hear a quiet thumping in every direction. It is the sound of tails wagging around the world, a sort of dog applause for a great spirit who gave so much."

New DITR logo shirts available on Cafepress!
Go here to order

also in reverse logo

a side note - I got my women's long sleeve and they run on the small side and are a slightly stretchy blend rather than 100% cotton. I got a medium and it's a little snug through the hips - but shorter in length which is nice for us shorter peeps. The men's long sleeve & sweatshirts are Hanes cotton and run a little large. If that helps!

(If we get together a minimum of 15 of the same item, we can get a bulk discount.)

Nancy Z, Judy C and Kathie W have all expressed interest in adding to a bulk order.
Tell me what shirts you are interested in and I will start a tally list on the RHN.
If / when we get to 15 of a style, I'll put in the order.

(Or you can order directly from the cafepress site (links above). *S*)

TALLY:
Judy wants a dark long sleeved women's T & an ash grey sweatshirt

Kathie W wants a Womans long sleeve T (light) Womans long sleeve T (dark)
Mens long sleeve (light) Mens T (dark) Tote bag, Lg mug

ALSO window decals and magnets:

Let me know if you would like the ditr logo for your car window, or a magnet like the one that is on the RH refrigerator. Decals are $5, magnets are $10. I can also get additional Ruff Revue window decals or as magnets, also.
Email if you want to order any!

Dog Flu
Check out this article in case any of your students ask.
I find it perplexing that the first lead sentence is "A new, highly contagious and sometimes deadly canine flu is spreading in kennels and at dog tracks around the country, veterinarians said yesterday." But then later in the article quotes a eterinarian saying, "The hysteria out there is unbelievable, and the misinformation is incredible," said Dr. Ann E. Hohenhaus, chief of medicine at the Animal Medical Center in New York."

update from Lisa: "I talked to Dr. Wood and asked her about it and her response was, "It is nothing. I just got some information about it from WSU and it is nothing to worry about" Typical panic, hysteria and distorted facts.

New policy change regarding xfers/make-ups:

Should an emergency or illness occur, please call as early as possible to make arrangements for transfer to a future class. Transfers must be taken within 60 days. No refunds after week 2.

RIPPLES ON A POND
This time from Iowa:
Hello, Your web site and articles on dog behavior rock! I am president (volunteer position) of Animal Welfare Foundation of Iowa, a nonprofit organization committed to helping dogs in counties without animal shelters. Would it be acceptable to reprint one of your articles, giving credit as you outline on your site, in each issue of our e-newsletter? Some people no doubt print and read it, others read it on. Just making sure this is acceptable. Thanks! -- Nancy Crist, Copywriter/Public Relations Specialist

Article Thanks
Hi there! I was looking for another article and came across your website. I am very impressed and particularly like the article about the overstimulated hyper dog as I am the "proud" owner of an easily excited, immature nearly 5 yo Welsh Springer spaniel who I attempt to do competitive obedience with. While I have been doing some of the things you suggest, it is good to see a whole programme and I will use it. I also plan to print off some of the other articles for people in my obedience classes. It all comes back around *S*
Hi, I am sure you don't remember me but I visited Diamonds in the Ruff Back in about 2000. I was being trained under Liz Droege with PETsMART. I will never forget the Positive influence that the Ruff House and Liz had on me. The access to Books and videos got me started down the correct path. I continued training at PETsMART in Montana until a little over one year ago, when I moved to Wyoming and started my own program in a community with few dog trainers. I now teach a variety of classes at my home and at several local small towns. Thanks

Thank you, instructors and assistants!
Your depth of knowledge and ability to size up a situation and give humane and well-thought out advice is priceless.
Thank you for striving to be the best help you can to our students and their dogs!

I once counseled a student who was having seroius trouble with aggression in a class at another school. I asked what the instructor had recommended that she do. She answered, "Well, she just said, 'don't let him do that.'" ????
Not at our school! Keep up the good work, guys!
