KIND WORDS FROM OUR STUDENTS

The following are a few letters and photos of and by our students!

      Student writes:

DITR is such a great program. We are currently taking our second class and are thrilled with the immediate progress our dogs have made. DITR training help teach us how to make our dogs a very enjoyable part of our lives. No more chewing things they shouldn't, no more 'marking', no more digging, no more jumping up on visitors as soon as they come to the door. DITR makes it very enjoyable and rewarding to work with and teach new behaviors and skills to our dogs. We actually look forward to training sessions and LOVE to take the dogs out for walks. They are actually getting so well trained with their "manners" that I can take them to work with me and have them sit in my office while I work and have co-workers stop by without worrying if they'll run off, jump on someone, or have an accident. DITR is the best investment a person can make in their pet!!!!

From a Favorite Former Social Skills Grad:

      Carol & Dana,

I hope all is well with you. Rob and I are great. Oh yah...so is Sofie. I wanted to let you know that Sofie is doing great. She's doing great because of the training she got at Diamond's in the Ruff. Sofie loves to be around other dogs. She approaches them in a cautious manner, greats then plays. We hike at Edgecliff with her 'off leash' (shhhh, don't tell) and approaching other dogs has not been a problem. Fortunately, because of her nature, and mine, I will always be cautious. Probably a good thing.

Sofie and her cat are inseparable. She's even adopted the next door neighbor cat as her backyard cat. Sofie still has a problem with the dog over one house. There are two fences between she and the other dog. Sofie will bark at the do, in a 'can't you come over and play?' manner. Rob and I have observed that fences can also cause her to be territorial, or protective.

Sofie loves visitors in the house. We have a lot of family visit for periods of time. All of them love having her around. She's turned out to be a very happy dog. She has a look of anticipation, of 'what's next?'. Sofie doesn't see her mom and dad as often any more. I don't know if you remember, they used to live a block away. They moved to a house by Audobon Park. Sofie's dad took fourth place at national competition for frisbee throwing in accuracy and distance. I don't know why that's important. It just seemed like it needed to be said.

Now, Rob and I are in the process of an international adoption. We're trying to determine how to introduce a little one into the house. I've thought about playing recordings of childrens sounds and carrying around a doll so Sofie will get used to this on more than a 'the family's here to visit' basis. We've got about 1 year to take care of this though. I'm confident Sofie, and we, will do fine with this.

Thanks again for allowing Sofie to be a member of our family.

I've met your dogs, and it still amazes me, 7 years later, how loving, consistent training can bring out the best in a dog. We're planning on adding a dog to our family within the year, and if there's anything I learned from you guys it's the importance of being the perfect family for your dog, not just finding the perfect dog for your family. Thanks for maintaining such an awsome, accessible resource for dog people.

From Students now in Bangor, Maine!

Not sure if you remember us, but 4+ years ago my husband and I adopted a shepherd mix female puppy from the Pullman animal shelter. We drove from Colfax to take classes with you and I think we took every class you offered ( some more than once). Jedzia was a pretty high energy, busy girl but thanks to all of your help she was always a lot of fun and even when we were frustrated with her or more appropriately - her with us - we knew we had somewhere to get help and answers to our questions. We moved to Bangor, Maine almost two years ago and have never found dog/people classes as good as yours. We have missed being able to take classes with you but never more than now as Jedzia now has a baby brother (canine of course).

I wanted to share with you a DITR success story - you probably have tons of them but I hope you have time for one more. We took the pet therapy class several times - looking to work on manners and control and got intrigued by the idea of pet therapy work. Jedzia has always loved everyone (sometimes too much) and seemed to enjoy the visits at the nursing home. I could talk about J forever but to keep it short, Jedzia has been "working" as a pet therapist at the Bangor Mental Health Institute for the past year+. I am so proud of her and her ability to make people feel better. She does an excellent job of reading people's emotions. She can sit quietly with a person and let them pet her or she can play ball and do tricks. I am not sure what it is about dogs but many of the clients are able to release emotions with her that they can not express to people. She takes everything in stride and loves the attention she gets while visiting. It's great to have people compliment Jedzia on her manners and how smart she is. So much of what she does was learned in a class at DITR. Spokane is lucky to have you. Thanks so much!

      From Sammy's folks!

Hi Dana, First of all, we REALLY enjoy your classes! Your lively, entertaining instructing style makes the information easy to understand, remember—and fun! Although we already thought Sammy was the cutest, most brilliant and lovable puppy in the world (I’m sure you’ve probably noticed how enamored we are of him), the things we are learning at Diamonds In The Ruff are helping give us a better understanding and deeper appreciation of Sammy and our relationship with him.

The training and daily practice is providing a fun, new dimension to the bonding experience I think we might otherwise have missed out on. I think all young couples should first try using the basic principles you are teaching to raise a polite, respectful, well-mannered puppy BEFORE they try raising kids of their own. It is too easy in America today to inadvertently ingrain our kids with an insidious “sense of entitlement” that can become destructive to their families, relationships, and to themselves. Training Sammy has required John and I constantly examine and communicate—and come to agreement on—our expectations, methods and discipline.

Dilemma solved - note of student appreciation:

Thank you for your support! Because of it I felt motivated to make our class attendance happen as well as feeling like we should be there regardless of our obstacles of lateness, etc. You are proving yourselves to be people of integrity and caring of others in your business environment. I am grateful for this and appreciate who you are. Your instructors picked up the ball on the other end, upon our arrival, and we experienced a great time in class. Mosa loved going to class and it made our day as well as it opened doors in our relationship with our sweet dog. You and your people are awesome.

      Warmest regards, Louise

      From Arco!

Dana & Carol, Hi! I'm not sure if you remember us, but we took 2 puppy training classes with you. Arco is now 14 months. He's doing well; still full of energy! The photo is of him on "lifeguard duty" in our backyard-ha! Since then, Kurt has made a step for him, so he can jump in after his toys and swim around. We've both been so happy that we took your training courses. We are seeing the benefits of it more and more each day. Our friends were recently impressed with Arco knowing his colors!

Thanks again and hope you're having a fun summer, -
      Wendy Sedlacek

      From a clicker class student:

      Good Morning Carol and Dana,
Just wanted to show you how much Benji enjoys your videos that you let us borrow. Of course he ran back and forth with the dog in training and barked everytime he didn't get the treat the trainer was handing out. He sat in front of that T.V. the minute he heard the clicker.

It was facinating to watch the attention Benji gave this Video and he watched it till the very end. Just thought you might get a chuckle out of this. You've probably seen this behavior before, but my husband and I haven't, and we enjoyed watching Benji watch and react. I'd call this a good "Training Tool"...shows Benji and us just how to do it right....(especially for me, seeings how I can't remember everything correctly). Have enjoyed bringing Benji to your training classes, as they are so helpful and so full of information.

Thanks for all your patience too.

From a Student now living in the Seattle area who signed our guest book:

You're welcome for the note. I am embarrassed that I didn't do it sooner. Your help with Ibanez really opened up a whole new world for me. He & I have gone on to some wonderful things, including the pet therapy.

Because of my experiences with Ibanez, I was able to take on 2 more spooky/shy greyhounds. The kind that nobody else had the patience for. I am now thinking that I might try agility with one of my hounds, something that I thought impossible many years ago. All of them are benefiting from your long ago training and for that I can only say thank you! And that is just so inadequate.

It is great to know that you are still helping other owners and dogs be their best and to understand one another. Please keep up the good work and know that what you are teaching today causes ripples, very positive ones!

      Thank you again!
      Pippa

      Dear Dana & Carol,

Thank you so much for your GREAT classes at Diamonds in the Ruff. We have learned so much and plan to continue throughout the summer "treating" ourselves to good behavior. Ginger continues to enjoy all she's learning, and we are so enjoying this new adventure of dog ownership.

I hope to do some more classes in the fall. We have a lot to apply and learn during the summer months and I feel equipped with all your great handouts.

Keep up the good work with all you do. We've enjoyed every bit.

      Sincere thanks,

      Jim & Debbie Clark
      Jennifer, James, Joy & GINGER!

      Dear Carol and Dana:

I would like to thank you for all your effort and hard work. You not only have made us much better and patient at raising our pup, but you have taught us the value and commitment of pet ownership. We have learned so much by attending your classes. My husband said he no idea that it would be so much fun to train a dog. Even though Grace can be a brat and a bossy dog, we now have some tools to nip things in the bud when she misbehaves.

      Canoe trip excitement

Hi- We took your class last winter and purchased a gentle leader for Ally. It has been a great tool! In a recent canoe trip, we managed to dump our canoe and ourselves into the St. Joe River. In the bottom of the boat was our leash and gentle leader, unfortunately neither float. We have looked at Petco and Petsmart for a replacement but we don't like the ones that they have as much as the one we got from you. Can we purchase another at your shop or is there somewhere we can go to get one? Thanks for your assistance! We will remember to put the leash in the dry bag from now on. =)

PS - Your class has given us tools that we continually use. Ally just turned 1 year old on July 20th and she is an excellent addition to our family. She is an angel (most of the time) thanks to your training tips. Thanks Again!

      Baxter's breakthrough!

We have had a major breakthrough! Baxter walked 2 blocks at my side with a slack leash. The clicker really cinched it. I've had a lot of questions about training with this method. I bought the book, "Don't Shoot the Dog" but found it long on philosophy. I am hoping you can recommend a book that is just a practical step by step guide.

I was at the pet store Saturday with my son. As we were leaving he said, "There's a Baxter dog." I looked at the picture and realized that it was Baxter. We were so surprised to see him and I have teased my son that he doesn't even recognize our own dog!

      Thanks,

      Mary Anne Zimmer

Thank you from BJ, the 80-lb+ Golden Retriever Lap Dog!

BJ is really glad we came to Prep School. She had a great time and even learned something!! She will not be happy this coming Saturday when she discovers that we are not going to school, but I'll pull out the clicker and the treats and that will help a little.

Thanks so much for the great pointers and the moral support when I thought I would only spend my time trying to control her! Each day is better, although we occasionally have a new challenge. Your class was great and your positive training methods and guidelines really helpful!

      Thank you!

      BJ and Betsy

      Dear Carol & Dana,

I can't remember who I spoke with, but your advice has already made a difference. It is fun to see Buddy with a better understanding and appreciation for his tender heart.

I look forwrad to meeting you and greatly appreciate your time and advice over the phone in addition to the written page on sensitive dogs.

      Sincerely,
      Dawn M. Decker

      Hi Gang!

Just a note to let you know how things are going. Zoe turned out to be a wonderful addition to our family. Besides suffering from the dreaded doggie disease, Selective Memory Impairment, she's a pretty well-behaved dog. Getting her into class and socializing her was the best thing we could have done. Of course, she now believes the world and everyone on it was created just for her enjoyment.

I'm still thinking of getting her into flyball or agility classes in the summer. You may even see her at next year's Ashley Whippet Frisbee competition ... if I can ever learn to throw!

-Kelly, Don, Ben, Mackenzie and "Zoe" Corson

      Dear Carol & Dana,

Thank you for all your help with Chamie's and my education. We really have become a team these last three months with your guidance. She's my best friend and I love her very much. Hope to see you in the Spring!

      - Linda & "Chamie" Palmer

      Dana & Carol,

We've been meaning to send a note of thanks to thank you both again for all your help, insight, encouragement and incredible teaching with Chester and us, as well. Carol you have a real gift in working with dogs and people. We would have been frustrated "parents" without Diamonds in the Ruff training!

Chester received his first "Springer" cut and looks much more sophisticated and mature. The groomers were pleasantly surprised at how well-behaved/trained Chester was (being a puppy and a Springer). I told them we had been attending your classes ... they wrote your name down. *S*

Anyway, we hope to see you both again and would like to attend classes this fall when life slows down for us. Take care!

      -Steve, Jennifer and "Chester" Frey

      Hi Carol and Dana,

This is a long overdue "Thank You" for the training in class, and being in such a positive environment while we were all learning.

I have been a little hesitant to 'test the waters' with Mugsy [a black Chow], but J.B. hasn't. And the results are there.

For instance, when we first got Mugsy, ANY open door was a way out. Now, with the training, the dual door we have that leads from the living room into an entry way, either onto the deck or into the garage is no longer a threat. We can leave the inside door open, and he will not go any further, just peek out to see what we are doing. If we invite him further, then he is very happy.

The front door we can now open without his thrashing his way out. He waits, he does the STAY. The basement back door that leads into his domain he tries to shortcut. He will go to the door and immediately sit with nose at the door. So, I make him back up and sit stay until I open the door and motion for him, "OK", he does not go out. He wants to, and will try, but it is certainly coming.

So, we wanted to thank you as we did not have a chance after the last class. We will work on things this winter and in the Spring see what needs to be done.

      Thank you again

-J.B. & Dianne Edmond and "Mugsy" of course

      "Gracie" and "Georgia"

      Dear Carol,

Not sure if you remember us from the summer before last, but we think of you often and what you did to keep Georgia with us. As you can see, they have worked things out and get along very well now. We can never thank you enough and we give your name to so many people.

Again, thank you. We couldn't imagine life without both of them. You are a gift to so many people and pups.

      -The Soderbergs, "Gracie" and "Georgia"

      Dear Diamonds in the Ruff,

Thanks to your classes, Mattie (blue heeler cross) is much easier to live with. She had a tough puberty (7-10 months) but had her 1st birthday this month. She is no longer aloof and angry but instead mischievous, loving and happy. Thank you all for your help.

      -Tammy, Angie and "Mattie"

      Dear Carol,

I can't thank you enough for your call the other day. I found the book by Dr. Dodson that you spoke of, I'm about 1/4 of the way through and it is facinating. We're still investigating the courses of action, but just talking to you helped immensely. Thanks again for your helpful advice.

      -Andy & Tami Rotchford

      "Griffey" & "Boomer"

      Carol & Dana,

Thank you for all your help and guidance this last year. We are looking forward to a New Year with Griffey and Boomer in your classes.

      Best Regards,
      -Nancy Eagle
