A wading pool for the kids and the dog! A favorite toy submerged or floating will provide entertainment while they cool off.

Not all dogs know how to swim. Some enjoy wading while others like to dive off the dock. Supervise your dogs in the water as you would your children. Going sailing? Even strong swimmers will tire before the can make it to shore if thrown from the boat in the middle of the lake. There are life jackets for dogs, too!

When out for a hike, be sure to routinely check your dog's paws and pads for injuries and his fur for ticks and burrs ...

on hot days, walk early in the morning or after it cools in the evening.

Know the area well; be sure it is safe and far from traffic and other hazards. And make sure that your dog has a really reliable recall BEFORE you turn him loose in the woods - or you might lose him in the woods!

And remember to stop for water often!
